INTERACTIVE DRUMMING at Bridgeport Library 2011

This evening was a fun interactive drum circle with children and parents and staff at the Bridgeport Library - we experienced drumming, chanting and playing rhythmical games. Outside it poured with rain and it was cold, but we warmed up the Library and everyone in it!
When I arrived at the Library, carrying all my drums and percussion instruments, I was greeted by the smiling faces of the staff at the Library who had prepared this fun announcement - what a lovely welcome!

Location: Medford Friends Meeting House, 14 Union St., Medford, NJ

Through the language of color and by using simple exercises, such as meditation and visualization, Madeleine assists people to attain greater understanding of their unique qualities, their gifts, and their life purpose.

Suzanne Tribe Originally from Argentina, Suzanne Tribe has performed extensively in a variety of world music genres from folk songs, blues to the ‘bagualas’ of the Argentinean Andes where she did her research. As Associate Professor at the University of Buenos Aires she created new methods for training dance mayors in the use of vocal expression and percussion.   She moved to the US in 2005 where she trained in the HealthRHYTHMS protocol. She also teaches musical improvisation workshops and classes on shamanic healing techniques at the Center for Integrative Medicine in Cos Cob, CT.

In this experiential workshop we will explore with Madeleine the prism of colors we are, reflecting our accumulated wisdom and experience. She will teach us the tune of each chakra with relationship to its color and we will intone those sounds.

In the afternoon session, Suzanne will lead us on a journey to find our inner sacred sound and will demonstrate on her Tonoscope how the sound of your voice creates beautiful geometric patterns. Your voice made visible!  She will bring us on a journey through drumming, movement and visualization. Please bring a drum or percussion instrument; a limited number of drums will be available. You may want to bring a pillow/blanket for sitting on the floor.  A one-hour lunch will follow the completion of the morning session. HealthRHYTHMS: 7 Evidence-Based Health Elements
Stress-Reduction HealthRHYTHMS (Group Composite Drumming) strengthened the immune system by increasing Natural Killer (NK) cell activity. (Bittman, Alternative Therapies, 2001) This protocol also reversed multiple components of the human stress response on the genomic level, not just reducing but reversing 19 genetic switches that turn on the stress response believed responsible in the development of common diseases. (Bittman, Medical Science Monitor, 2005)

Exercise Drumming is an accessible exercise which burns calories and improves mood and may reduce the risk of disease. A Norwegian study of 25,000 women age 20-54 that performed leisure time exercises at least 4 hours/week experienced a 37% reduction in the risk of breast cancer. (Thune, Brenn, Lund, Gaard, 1997)

Self-Expression HealthRHYTHMS Empowers people to move beyond their perceived boundaries.

Camaraderie/Support A 1992 Duke University Study linked lengthened lifespan with having a close confidant. HealthRHYTHMS protocol builds camaraderie and support by creating a safe space where people feel comfortable sharing and offering support.

Nurturing HealthRHYTHMS protocol creates a level playing field where support of growth and development is encouraged. As equal partners in this process participants often discover inner strength and encouragement by those sharing the experience.

Spirituality HealthRHYTHMS is a group hand-drumming protocol. According to Jan Gregory, Adjunct Professor of Liturgy, Worship and Spirituality at Hartford Seminary, “Hand drumming is an ancient art that has been used in many cultures. The music of drums creates a conduit to the Divine. This is an opportunity to experience worship with our bodies as well as our minds”.

Music-Making Systematic inquiry into the relationship between music and brain function is one of the most rapidly developing fields of human research. “Music making offers extensive exercise for brain cells and their synapses (connections). It would be difficult to find another activity that engages so many of the brain’s systems.”(Weinberger, N., 1998)

HealthRHYTHMS - MOVING BEYOND PERCEIVED LIMITATIONS

“HealthRHYTHMS is an experience in which participants find the courage to express their innermost feelings and move beyond their fears or perceived limitations; the group creates the healing process which ushers entrance into a place of confidence and well being, acceptance and understanding; renewing a sense of community and bonding.
What amazes me, over and over, is the synchronicity of events that take place during the HealthRHYTHMS sessions and afterwards in the lives of participants - where the shift and the healing that takes place during the HealthRHYTHMS session then unfolds in their lives.”

CYMATICS TONOSCOPE - YOUR VOICE MADE VISIBLE!

Cymatics Tonoscope - Your Voice made Visible!
Sing or tone into this tonoscope I made, and watch your voice create patterns, including striking geometric shapes right in front of your eyes!
Patterns change as you shift from one pitch to another, from one vowel to another. See what happens singing part of a Mozart aria! Experiment!

Dr Hans Jenny’s work on Cymatics has contributed enormously to the fields of Sound Healing and Energy Medicine. Vibrational therapies work on the energy field using music, sound, movement etc to entice a change in the field.

Hear the Sound, See the Pattern, Feel the Vibration, held together by the vibrational field.

This picture was taken at one of my classes as a student sang into the tonoscope.

Cymatics Presentation at Pymander Bookstore - CT

Jeff Volk's presentation on "CYMATICS  and RESONANCE" at Pymander Bookstore in Norwalk, CT on Saturday April 16, was a wonderful opportunity to go deeper into the understanding and experience of Cymatics, the study of sound and how it affects matter and how it creates cohesive organized patterns. Jeff's wonderful presentation included scientific explanations, stunning visual images, film clips, stories about the life of Hans Jenny, precursors in this field; music and recitations of his own poems. He wove it all together with some thought provoking insights on the nature of change and coherence as it relates to the process of life around us and within us. It was a deep, thorough presentation, the room was packed and great energy from participants!
At the end of Jeff's presentation, he invited me to demonstrate using my home made tonoscope. In the pic you can see as I (Suzanne Tribe) sing and tone into a tube that is connected to a hub with a membrane sprinkled with salt, which is being vibrated by the sound of my voice and adopts different patterns and geometric shapes. You can also see a view of Pymander Bookstore, which is lovely and has a ton of cool books and items for healing and well-being. You can also see Kristen, the owner, with a client in the background.
We then opened up the exploration to all present and they experienced and watched how their voices created patterns, including striking geometric shapes right in front of their eyes! In this pic you can see Jeff Volk (left), Jennifer Baron, my daughter, who helped with the tonoscope demo; Stephen, who attended the presentation and is experimenting with the pitch of C, and myself in supporting role!
This is a pic of one of the geometric shapes that was created as Jennifer Baron sang beautiful high pitched notes and part of a Mozart aria into the tonoscope.
All pictures by Charles Tribe
A special thanks to my "team" Jennifer Baron, vocals, and Charles Tribe, photographs, and both helped transport, set up the tonoscope and do the demo! You are the best!!!

Sound made visible! This is a pic of my first experiment with cymatics - the human voice creating visible patterns and shapes that move and are in flux with changes in pitch, vowels sounds and resonance.
I built a HOME MADE TONOSCOPE and used salt on the blue membrane. Also used my phone to record the pitch. I look forward to more explorations and sharing with others interested in cymatics! Watch the video on Youtube by clicking on the title of this post!
